  1. Your dryer is broken, so the landlord orders a new one…..from Italy.
  2. To do laundry, you load your clothes into reusable bags from the grocery store, strap them to your bicycle, and ride several blocks to a laundromat.
  3. Finding a good taco means taking a 45 minute journey to the other side of the city.
  4. Your internet is way faster, and much cheaper.
  5. Topless women on TV or the F word on billboards no longer shocks you.
  6. Your cable subscription includes Playboy TV as part of the “basic package”.
  7. In order to buy Stove Top Stuffing, you take a bus, then a tram, and then walk another few blocks to find a tiny store where “rumor has it”, they carry it.
  8. Said store also carries Trix and Fruit Loops Cereal…for 10 Euros each (about $13)
  9. You know your bus stop, but can’t pronounce it (Cruquiusweg).
  10. There are sail boats floating 20 feet from your apartment building front door.
  11. There’s a local bar located inside a windmill…..wait, bad example.
  12. You’ve only lived here 6 weeks, and say things like “Well, the problem is the tourists….”
  13. Customer service is generally pretty good, unless you’re in a grocery store, where if the workers only look like they want to injure you as opposed to actively trying to injure you, you’re having a good day.
  14. You see a Foot Locker and get excited because it’s a store you know.
  15. It’s late September, and wearing 3 layers of clothing plus a jacket, while still being cold, is considered “normal.”

Wow, great list! I had to laugh at some of them that I know all too well…like #7, 9, and 13! I still remember paying about 9 euros for a bag of microwave popcorn at the British food store in A’dam, before realizing that the ones they sell at Dirk are cheaper and tastier. Glad to find a new blog about life in the Netherlands!

Hey Heather! Glad you stumbled across my blog. A few months before moving, I think I spent like 3 or 4 hours reading your blog one day. It was extremely helpful. Hope all is going well in the Great White North!

I don’t think it is true when you say that your cable subscription includes Playboy TV as part of the “basic package”. None of the cable providers in the Netherlands offer Playboy channel in the basic package.

OK, I think we’re both partly correct. My package is the “Digital TV Starter” from UPC, but they had a package that is lower, “Standard TV” that does not have it.
